If your business or residence is not connected to a municipal sewer system, it’s most likely your property relies on a septic system to treat wastewater. When you’re in need of septic system installation, maintenance, or repair and you’re located in the Greater Tampa Bay area, Southern Water and Soil will be at your service.

When a traditional septic system consisting of a septic tank and drain field is not ideal for your property, Southern Water and Soil will engineer a wastewater treatment solution best for you, and many times a package treatment plant will be the best option.

How Do Package Treatment Plants Work?

A package treatment plant consists of a multi-chamber tank. Unlike conventional septic systems, all package treatment plants use an aerobic digestive process to treat raw sewage. Through the use of oxygen-using bacteria, solid matter is reduced at a more rapid rate.

Treatment of wastewater in a package system is accomplished in three stages. First, sewage enters the pretreatment chamber similar to that of a traditional septic tank. Here, heavy solids (sludge) sink to the bottom of the chamber, separating themselves from the wastewater and floating solids like oils and grease (scum).

During the second stage of treatment, oxygen is mixed with the scum and liquid mixture. In this phase, aerobic bacteria reduce the sewage into simple compounds. An air pump or compressor provides aeration. Depending on the package treatment plant selected, aeration can take place in the first chamber, which also helps break down sludge or it takes place in its own chamber apart from the sludge. If the latter design is chosen, the pretreatment chamber which stores the sludge must be periodically pumped.

The final stage takes place in the clarification chamber. Here, heavier solids are separated from the effluent and returned to the aeration chamber for further processing. The clarified liquid then enters the environment for proper disposal.
